Introduction
Chikako (Chika-ko), born October 19, 1879, died September 9, 1956. She was the seventh daughter of the former Satsuma domain lord, Duke Shimazu Tadayoshi, and also the Princess Kyūjō-no-miya. In 1906 (Meiji 32), she married Prince Kyūjō-no-miya. After marriage, she had three sons and three daughters. She was the mother of Emperor Shōjun and the grandmother of Emperor Akihito. Her sisters include Lady Kiyoko Kuroda, Princess Kikuko of Yōjō (Yamashina-no-miya), Lady Tomoko Tokugawa, and Lady Sadako Hisamatsu. Her two other sisters are Lady Masako Tokugawa, wife of Tokugawa Iemasa, and Lady Yoshiko Tokugawa, wife of Tokugawa Rieitsu. Her brothers include the 30th head of the Shimazu family, Shimazu Tadayoshi, and the father of Shimazu Hisamitsu, husband of Shimazu Takako, who was the granddaughter of the former Satsuma domain lord.
