Introduction
Henrietta Bentinck, Duchess of Portland (née Scott), was born in 1774 in Edinburgh, Scotland, and died on 24 April 1844. She was the eldest daughter and heir of Major-General John Scott of Fife and his second wife, Margaret Dundas. Henrietta had two younger sisters, Lucy and Joan. Lucy was married to Francis Stuart, 10th Earl of Moray, and Joan was the wife of George Canning, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, and held the title of Viscountess Canning.
Prior to her marriage, Henrietta was sometimes referred to as "the rich Miss Scott" to distinguish her from her sisters. On 4 August 1795, in London, she married William Bentinck, who was then styled Marquess of Titchfield. At the time of her marriage, William was the heir apparent to the Dukedom of Portland. Following their marriage, the Marquess of Titchfield obtained a Royal Licence to take the surname and arms of Scott in addition to Cavendish-Bentinck.
Henrietta and William Bentinck had nine children:
1. William Henry, Marquess of Titchfield (22 October 1796 – 5 March 1824)
2. Lady Margaret Harriet Cavendish-Scott-Bentinck (1798–1882), who did not marry
3. Lady Caroline Cavendish-Scott-Bentinck (1799–1828)
4. William Cavendish-Scott-Bentinck, 5th Duke of Portland (1800–1879)
5. Lord George Frederick Cavendish-Scott-Bentinck (1802–1848), who died unmarried
6. Lord Henry William Cavendish-Scott-Bentinck (1804–1870), who died unmarried
7. Lady Charlotte Cavendish-Scott-Bentinck (1806–1889), who married John Evelyn Denison, 1st Viscount Ossington
8. Lady Lucy Joan Cavendish-Scott-Bentinck (1807–1899), who married Charles Ellis, 6th Baron Howard de Walden
9. Lady Mary Cavendish-Scott-Bentinck (1809–1874), who married Lieutenant-Colonel Sir William Topham
In 1809, upon the death of her father-in-law, Henrietta's husband inherited the Dukedom of Portland, and she became Duchess of Portland. The family resided at Welbeck Abbey in Nottinghamshire, where the duke kept racehorses and undertook extensive irrigation works.
Two of their sons died before their parents: the Marquess of Titchfield at age 27 from a brain lesion, and Lord George Bentinck from a heart attack. Henrietta predeceased her husband, who died at Welbeck Abbey in March 1854 at the age of 85.
