Lord Henry William Scott-Bentinck was born on 9 June 1804 and died on 31 December 1870. He was a member of the British Conservative Party and held political office as a Member of Parliament.
Background and Family
He was the third son of William Bentinck, the 4th Duke of Portland, and Henrietta Scott, daughter of Major-General John Scott. His familial relationships included his elder brothers William Cavendish-Scott-Bentinck, who became the 5th Duke of Portland, and Lord George Bentinck. The Bentinck family was prominent within British aristocracy and politics.
Political Career
Lord Henry Bentinck served as the Member of Parliament for North Nottinghamshire from 1846 to 1857. In addition to his parliamentary duties, he was a Trustee of the British Museum. He was recognized for his interest in hunting and was known as a well-known hound man.
Involvement in Slavery-Related Claims
Despite his advocacy for the abolition of slavery, Lord Henry Bentinck submitted a claim for compensation related to slavery. The claim was for the sum of £2,411 and concerned 46 enslaved Africans on the L'amitie estate in Trinidad. The claim was unsuccessful.
Personal Life and Death
Lord Henry William Scott-Bentinck died in December 1870 at the age of 66.
