Introduction
Frederick William Hervey, 1st Marquess of Bristol, was born on October 2, 1769. He was the son of Frederick Hervey, 4th Earl of Bristol, who also served as Bishop of Derry, and Elizabeth Davers, daughter of Sir Jermyn Davers, 4th Baronet. Hervey was the younger son in his family; however, his elder brother John Hervey passed away during their father's lifetime, which led Frederick William to inherit the earldom upon his father's death in 1803. He had three sisters: Lady Mary Erne, Elizabeth Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire, and Louisa Jenkinson, Countess of Liverpool.
In 1786, Hervey was admitted to St John's College, Cambridge. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1805. His military service included acting as an Ensign in the 1st Foot Guards from 1788 to 1793. During the French Revolutionary Wars, he was involved in volunteer military activities, serving as a captain in a volunteer infantry regiment at Bury St Edmunds in 1798 and as Major-commandant of the Ickworth Yeomanry.
Hervey also held political office as a Member of Parliament for Bury St Edmunds from 1796 to 1803. In 1806, he inherited the estates of his uncle, Sir Charles Davers, 6th Baronet. In 1826, he was elevated to the peerage as Marquess of Bristol and Earl Jermyn. His son, Frederick William Hervey (1800–1864), succeeded him as the 2nd Marquess of Bristol and served as MP for Bury St Edmunds from 1830 to 1859.
Hervey married Elizabeth Albana Upton (1775–1844), daughter of Clotworthy Upton, 1st Baron Templetown, and Elizabeth Upton, Baroness Templetown. Together, they had eight children: six sons and two daughters. Their children included Lady Augusta Hervey, who married Frederick Charles William Seymour and had six children; Frederick Hervey, who became the 2nd Marquess of Bristol; Lady Georgiana Elizabeth Charlotte Hervey, who married Rev. Hon. John Grey; Major Lord George Hervey; Lord William Hervey; Rt. Rev. Lord Arthur Charles Hervey, Bishop of Bath and Wells; Lady Sophia Elizabeth Caroline Hervey; Rev. Lord Charles Amelius Hervey; and Lord Alfred Hervey.
Frederick William Hervey died on February 15, 1859, from gout. Initially, he was buried in the Gothic Revival tomb on land he donated for Woodvale Cemetery in Brighton. Subsequently, his remains were transferred to St Mary's Church, Ickworth, near Ickworth House, where the marquesses are traditionally interred. Cremated remains are stored in a mausoleum near the cemetery grounds.
