Introduction

Frederick William Hervey, 2nd Marquess of Bristol, PC, FSA, was born on 15 July 1800 in Portland Place, Marylebone, London. He was the eldest son of Frederick Hervey, 1st Marquess of Bristol, and Elizabeth Albana Upton, daughter of Clotworthy Upton, 1st Baron Templetown. Hervey had a younger brother named Lord Arthur Hervey.

Hervey received his education at Eton College before attending Trinity College, Cambridge. In 1826, his father was elevated to a marquessate, and Hervey adopted the courtesy title Earl Jermyn.

He entered politics as a Member of Parliament for Bury St Edmunds in 1826, serving as one of its two representatives. That year, he was also sworn into the Privy Council. Hervey was affiliated with the Tory party and was appointed Treasurer of the Household in Sir Robert Peel's government in 1841, a position he held until 1846. During this period, he was involved in the administration of the government.

In 1846, Hervey succeeded his father as the 2nd Marquess of Bristol and moved to the House of Lords. In the same year, he was appointed Colonel of the disembodied West Suffolk Militia. When the militia was revived in 1853, he commanded the regiment during its first annual training in Bury St Edmunds. However, following the abolition of the colonelcy in militia units, he resigned this appointment on 3 August 1855 and subsequently became the regiment's first Honorary Colonel.

Apart from his political and military roles, Hervey was also a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries.

In his personal life, Lord Bristol married Lady Katherine Isabella Manners, daughter of John Manners, 5th Duke of Rutland, in 1830. They had seven children: four sons and three daughters. Their children included Frederick William John Hervey, who succeeded him as the 3rd Marquess of Bristol; Lady Mary Katharine Isabella Hervey; Lady Adeliza Georgiana Hervey; Lord Augustus Henry Charles Hervey; Lord John William Nicholas Hervey; Lord Francis Hervey; and Countess Jermyn.

Lady Katherine Isabella Manners died on 20 April 1848 at the age of 39, at 47 Eaton Place, London, from smallpox contracted during childbirth. Hervey remained a widower until his death.

Frederick William Hervey, 2nd Marquess of Bristol, died on 30 October 1864 at Ickworth House, Suffolk, aged 64. He was succeeded by his eldest son, Frederick, as the 3rd Marquess of Bristol.
