Introduction

Hester Stanhope, Viscountess Mahon (19 October 1755 – 20 July 1780), was born Lady Hester Pitt. She was the eldest daughter of William Pitt, 1st Earl of Chatham, and Hester Grenville. Her mother was the daughter of the 1st Countess Temple. Hester Pitt's birthplace was likely the Pay Office, which was her parents' residence at the time of her birth.

She married Charles Stanhope, who was then known as Viscount Mahon, on 19 December 1774. Charles Stanhope later became the 3rd Earl Stanhope. The marriage produced three children:

- Lady Hester Stanhope (1776–1839), known as a traveler and Arabist; she died unmarried in Syria at age 63.

- Lady Griselda Stanhope (21 July 1778 – 13 October 1851), who married John Tekell.

- Lady Lucy Rachel Stanhope (20 February 1780 – 1 March 1814), who eloped with Thomas Taylor of Sevenoaks, the family apothecary, and had children.

The family resided in London at a house located on Harley Street. After the birth of her third daughter, Lady Mahon contracted puerperal fever. She was taken to Chevening for her health but died there at the age of 24. She was buried at St Botolph's Church, Chevening.

Following her death, Charles Stanhope remarried in 1781 to Louisa Grenville, who was a first cousin of his first wife. In 1786, he inherited the titles and estate of his father after his older brother predeceased him.
