Introduction

Petronilla Melusina von der Schulenburg, Countess of Walsingham and Countess of Chesterfield, was born on 1 April 1693. She was the illegitimate daughter of King George I of Great Britain and his mistress, Melusine von der Schulenburg, Duchess of Kendal.

In 1722, Melusina von der Schulenburg was granted the titles of Baroness Aldborough and Countess of Walsingham as a life peer. Following the death of her father in 1727, she resided mainly with her mother at Kendal House in Isleworth, Middlesex.

On 5 September 1733, she married Philip Stanhope, the 4th Earl of Chesterfield. He was a prominent figure in Whig politics. The marriage did not produce any children.

There are claims based on "family letters" indicating that Melusina von der Schulenburg may have been the mother of Benedict Swingate Calvert, born around 1730–1732. It is suggested that she had an extramarital relationship with Charles Calvert, the 5th Baron Baltimore, leading to the birth of Benedict Swingate Calvert, whose mother is otherwise unidentified. Benedict was born in England and was the illegitimate son of the 5th Baron Baltimore.

Petronilla Melusina von der Schulenburg passed away on 16 September 1778.
