Introduction
Charles Greville was born on 2 November 1762. He was the fifth child and fourth son of Fulke Greville and his wife, Frances (née Macartney). His family resided at Wilbury House, located in Newton Tony, Wiltshire. Greville received his education at Westminster School.
Between 1778 and 1796, Greville served as an officer in various regiments of foot. On 31 March 1793, he married Lady Charlotte Cavendish-Bentinck, who was the third child and first daughter of William Cavendish-Bentinck, the 3rd Duke of Portland. The marriage produced four children: Harriet Catherine Greville, who married Francis Egerton, 1st Earl of Ellesmere; Charles Cavendish Fulke Greville; Algernon Frederick Greville; and Henry William Greville.
Greville's political career included serving as the Member of Parliament for Petersfield from 1795 to 1796. He held the position of Under-Secretary of State for Home Affairs from March 1796 until March 1798. In subsequent administrative roles, he was appointed Comptroller of Cash at the Excise Office in 1799, and served as Receiver-General of Taxes for Nottinghamshire. Additionally, he was appointed Naval Officer for Demerara and Essequibo in 1798, and in 1801, he became Secretary, Registrar, and Clerk of the Council for Tobago.
Charles Greville died on 26 August 1832 at the age of 69 in Hanover Square, London.
