Introduction

Algernon Frederick Greville was born on 29 December 1798. He was the second son of Charles Greville and Lady Charlotte Cavendish-Bentinck. His siblings included Charles Cavendish Fulke Greville, a diarist, and Henry William Greville. His paternal grandfather was Fulke Greville. He was a descendant of both the Duke of Beaufort and the Baron Brooke. His maternal grandfather was William Cavendish-Bentinck, 3rd Duke of Portland, and his maternal great-grandfather was William Cavendish, 4th Duke of Devonshire.

Greville participated in first-class cricket matches primarily between 1815 and 1823, making seven known appearances. He was associated mainly with the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) and also played for Middlesex and Hampshire.

In his military career, Greville was commissioned as an ensign in the Grenadier Guards on 1 February 1814. He fought in the Battle of Quatre Bras and the Battle of Waterloo. Additionally, he was present at the capture of Péronne. Following these engagements, he was appointed aide-de-camp to General Sir John Lambert and later became ADC to the Duke of Wellington. Greville served on Wellington’s staff until the end of the occupation of France.

In 1819, the Duke of Wellington appointed Greville as his private secretary when Wellington was named Master-General of the Ordnance. Greville continued in this role during Wellington's subsequent appointments as commander-in-chief (1827), prime minister (1828), foreign secretary (1834), and again as commander-in-chief (1842). In 1829, Greville was appointed Bath King of Arms and served as secretary to the Cinque Ports while Wellington held the position of Lord Warden.

Greville married Charlotte Maria Cox, daughter of R. H. Cox, on 7 April 1823. Charlotte died in 1841. Together, they had five children: Frances Harriett Greville (1824–1887), who married Charles Gordon-Lennox, 6th Duke of Richmond, in 1843; Georgiana Maria Greville (1826–1872); Lt. Col. Arthur Charles Greville (1827–1901), a Lieutenant-Colonel in the Scots Guards who died without issue; Augusta Mary Greville (1831–1921), who married George Montagu Warren Sandford, MP; and Lt. Cavendish Hubert Greville (1835–1854), who was killed at the Battle of Inkerman.

Algernon Frederick Greville died on 15 December 1864 in Hillingdon.
