Deng Xiaoping's father, Deng Shaochang, initially participated in the "Gelao Society" in his early years. During the Xinhai Revolution, he led a group in the Guang'an armed uprising. He was married four times in total. His second wife, Dan, bore three sons and two daughters: the eldest daughter, Deng Xianlian; the eldest son, Deng Xiansheng, who was Deng Xiaoping; the second son, Deng Xianxiu, also known as Deng Ken; the third son, Deng Xianzhi, also known as Deng Shuping; and the second daughter, Deng Xianzhen, who died of illness at age 10. His fourth wife, Xia Bogen, was the daughter of a boatman on the Jialing River.
