Introduction

Joan Canning, 1st Viscountess Canning (née Scott), was born in 1776 in Scotland. She was the daughter of Major-General John Scott and Margaret Dundas. Her family connections included notable siblings: Henrietta Bentinck, Duchess of Portland, and Lucy, wife of Francis Stuart, 10th Earl of Moray.

On 8 July 1800, Joan Scott married George Canning in St George's, Hanover Square, London. The wedding was attended by witnesses including John Hookham Frere and William Pitt the Younger. The union produced four children: George Charles Canning (1801–1820), who died from consumption; William Pitt Canning (1802–1828), who died from drowning in Madeira, Portugal; Harriet Canning (1804–1876), who married Ulick John de Burgh, 1st Marquess of Clanricarde; and Charles Canning (1812–1862), who later became the 2nd Viscount Canning and 1st Earl Canning.

Following her husband's death, Joan Canning was elevated to the peerage on 22 January 1828 as the 1st Viscountess Canning of Kilbraham, with a special remainder to the heirs male of her late husband. She resided in London at the family's Grosvenor Square residence, living with her youngest son.

Her coat of arms is associated with her title, although specific heraldic details are not provided in the available information. Joan Canning passed away on 14 March 1837.
