Introduction
Dorothy Bentinck, Duchess of Portland (née Cavendish), was born on 27 August 1750. She was the daughter of William Cavendish, 4th Duke of Devonshire, who served as Prime Minister of Great Britain, and Lady Charlotte Boyle, the 6th Baroness Clifford.
On 8 November 1766, she married William Cavendish-Bentinck, who later became the 3rd Duke of Portland. Their marriage produced nine children, of whom six survived to adulthood. Their children included William Bentinck, who became the 4th Duke of Portland, born on 24 June 1768 and died on 27 March 1854; Lord William Henry Cavendish-Bentinck, born on 14 September 1774 and died on 17 June 1839; Lady Charlotte Cavendish-Bentinck, born on 3 October 1775 and died on 28 July 1862; Lady Mary Cavendish-Bentinck, born on 13 March 1778 and died on 6 November 1843; Lord Charles Bentinck, born on 3 October 1780 and died on 28 April 1826; and Lord Frederick Cavendish-Bentinck, born on 2 November 1781 and died on 11 February 1828. The couple also had a stillborn child at Burlington House on 20 October 1786.
Dorothy Cavendish's later life was centered at Burlington House in Piccadilly, London. She died there on 3 June 1794 due to a bowel complaint, which she had suffered from for many years. The illness resulted in a mortification after a brief illness. Early speculation suggested her death might have been caused by consuming water-gruel from an improperly tinned copper saucepan, but this was later deemed incorrect after examination.
She was buried in St Marylebone Parish Church, Marylebone, London. Her ancestry and familial connections link her to the British royal family, as she was a great-great-great-grandmother of Queen Elizabeth II.
