Introduction

John FitzPatrick, 1st Earl of Upper Ossory (1719 – 23 September 1758), was an Anglo-Irish nobleman and politician associated with County Cork, Ireland. He was born in 1719, the son of Richard FitzPatrick, 1st Baron Gowran, and Anne Robinson. FitzPatrick received education at Queen’s College, Oxford.

In 1727, FitzPatrick succeeded his father as the 2nd Baron Gowran. In 1744, he inherited estates at Farmingwoods (modern-day Fermyn Woods) in Northamptonshire and Ampthill in Bedfordshire from his mother. On 5 October 1751, he was created Earl of Upper Ossory in the Irish peerage.

He served as Member of Parliament for Bedfordshire from 1753 to 1758.

FitzPatrick married Lady Evelyn Leveson-Gower on 29 June 1744. She was the daughter of the 1st Earl Gower. The couple had four children:

- John FitzPatrick, Lord Gowran, who later became the 2nd Earl of Upper Ossory (1745–1818).

- The Hon. Richard FitzPatrick (24 January 1748 – 25 April 1813).

- The Lady Mary FitzPatrick (born before 1751 – died 6 October 1778), who married the 2nd Baron Holland and had children.

- The Lady Louisa FitzPatrick (1755 – 7 August 1789), who married the 2nd Earl of Shelburne, later known as the 1st Marquess of Lansdowne, and was the mother of Henry Petty-Fitzmaurice, 3rd Marquess of Lansdowne.

John FitzPatrick died on 23 September 1758.
