Introduction
Louisa Petty, Marchioness of Lansdowne (née Lady Louisa FitzPatrick; later Petty Fitzmaurice), was born in 1755 and died on 7 August 1789. She was an Anglo-Irish aristocrat belonging to the Mac Giolla Phádraig dynasty.
Her parents were John FitzPatrick, 1st Earl of Upper Ossory, and Lady Evelyn Leveson-Gower, the daughter of John Leveson-Gower, 1st Earl Gower. Lady Louisa was the youngest daughter in her family. Her siblings included John FitzPatrick, who became the 2nd Earl of Upper Ossory; Richard FitzPatrick, who was a notable statesman and soldier; and Lady Mary Fox, also known as Baroness Holland. Lady Mary Fox’s portrait was painted by Thomas Gainsborough, Sir Joshua Reynolds, and Pompeo Batoni.
On 8 July 1779, Lady Louisa Fitzmaurice married William Petty, who was then the 2nd Earl of Shelburne. He served as Prime Minister of Great Britain for ten months from 1782 to 1783. Following his elevation, he was later created Marquess of Lansdowne. This marriage was his second wife.
The couple had children, including Lord Henry Petty, born in 1780. He later succeeded his elder half-brother as the 3rd Marquess of Lansdowne. Lady Louisa died at the age of approximately 34, on 7 August 1789.
