Introduction

Elizabeth Hester Douglas-Home, Baroness Home of the Hirsel (née Alington), was born on 6 November 1909 and died on 3 September 1990. She was the second daughter of the Very Rev Cyril Alington, who served as headmaster of Shrewsbury School and Eton College and was also chaplain to King George V. Her mother was Hester Margaret Lyttelton, daughter of George Lyttelton, 4th Baron Lyttelton.

Elizabeth Alington was notably the first woman to become a fellow (governor) of Eton College. She married Alec Douglas-Home on 3 October 1936. Alec Douglas-Home was a British politician who served as Prime Minister. Due to the various titles and statuses acquired and relinquished by her husband, Elizabeth is recorded by The Guinness Book of Records as having held more successive names during her lifetime than any other married woman in Britain.

The couple had four children:

- Lady (Lavinia) Caroline Douglas-Home, born 11 October 1937, who served as a Lady-in-Waiting to various members of the Royal Family.

- Lady Meriel Kathleen Douglas-Home, born 27 November 1939, who married Adrian Darby, Bursar of Keble College, Oxford.

- Lady Diana Lucy Douglas-Home, born 18 December 1940, and died 22 August 2024; she was married to James Wolfe Murray.

- David Alexander Cospatrick Douglas-Home, 15th Earl of Home, born 20 November 1943 and died 22 August 2022.

Elizabeth Douglas-Home died at the age of 80, having been married to Alec Douglas-Home for nearly 54 years. Her husband outlived her by just over five years.
