Princess Louisa Of Great Britain

Princess Louisa of Great Britain, also known as Louisa Anne, was born on 19 March 1749 at Leicester House in Westminster, London. She was a granddaughter of King George II, being the daughter of Frederick, Prince of Wales, and Princess Augusta of Saxe-Gotha. Her paternal grandparents were King George II and Caroline of Ansbach. She was the sister of King George III and was reportedly close to her sister Caroline Matilda, who was born in 1751.

Princess Louisa was christened at Leicester House on 11 April 1749. Her godparents included her paternal uncle, Prince Frederick of Hesse-Kassel, and her aunts, the Queen of Denmark and the Princess of Orange, all of whom were represented by proxies. Throughout her life, Louisa experienced health issues, with contemporaneous accounts suggesting she was "never more than an unhealthy child of thirteen or fourteen."

In 1764, negotiations took place between the British and Danish royal families regarding a marriage between the Danish heir to the throne, Prince Christian, and a British princess. Princess Louisa was initially considered a preferred match due to her status, but concerns about her health led to the selection of her younger sister, Caroline Matilda, for the marriage. The engagement was publicly announced in Great Britain on 10 January 1765.

In the same year, Louisa received a marriage proposal from Adolf Frederick of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, who was her brother's brother-in-law. However, negotiations for this union also did not progress, largely due to concerns regarding her health.

By 1766, it was reported that Princess Louisa's health was deteriorating further, attributed to advancing tuberculosis. Her condition progressed to the point that she became an invalid. Despite her fragile health, she remained unmarried and died at Carlton House, London, on 13 May 1768, at the age of 19. She left no descendants.

Princess Louisa was laid to rest unmarried and without issue, and her life is documented through familial and genealogical sources, including her portraits housed at the National Portrait Gallery in London.
