Introduction

Princess Eugenie, Mrs. Jack Brooksbank (born Eugenie Victoria Helena on March 23, 1990), is a member of the British royal family. She is the younger daughter of Prince Andrew, Duke of York, and Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York. Eugenie is a niece of King Charles III. At birth, she was sixth in the line of succession to the British throne, a position that changed to twelfth as of 2025.

Eugenie was born at the Portland Hospital in London. She was baptized Eugenie Victoria Helena at St Mary Magdalene Church, Sandringham, on December 23, 1990, by Bishop Peter Nott. She was the first royal baby to have a public christening and the only grandchild of Queen Elizabeth II not baptized in the Lily Font. Her parents divorced when she was six years old, resulting in joint custody arrangements. Following the divorce, the Queen provided her parents with funds to establish a trust for Eugenie and her sister Beatrice. Eugenie and her sister traveled abroad with their parents frequently.

In her childhood, Eugenie attended Winkfield Montessori School (1992–1993), Upton House School in Windsor, Coworth Park School (1995–2001), and St George’s School near Windsor Castle until 2003. She then studied at Marlborough College in Wiltshire for five years, earning three A-levels: 'A' grades in Art and English Literature, and a 'B' in History of Art. After a gap year, she entered Newcastle University in September 2009, graduating in 2012 with a 2:1 degree in English Literature and Art History.

During her gap year, Eugenie worked in New York City as a benefit auctions manager at Paddle8. She returned to London in July 2015 to join the contemporary art gallery Hauser & Wirth, initially as an associate director and promoted to director in 2017. Her career in the arts includes working with charitable organizations such as the Anti-Slavery Collective and Anti-Slavery International.

Eugenie underwent spinal surgery at age 12 for scoliosis, involving the placement of two titanium rods in her back. The operation was performed at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in London, after which she did not require further spinal surgeries.

In her personal life, she became engaged to Jack Brooksbank, a British marketing executive, in January 2018. The couple had been dating for seven years, having met during a ski holiday in Verbier, Switzerland. Their engagement was announced in the same month while they were vacationing in Nicaragua. The wedding was held at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, on October 12, 2018. Eugenie’s wedding dress was designed by Peter Pilotto and Christopher de Vos, which she chose to display her surgical scar as a symbol of overcoming her scoliosis. The couple has two sons: August Philip Hawke Brooksbank, born February 9, 2021, and Ernest George Ronnie Brooksbank, born May 30, 2023. August was born via Caesarean section at the Portland Hospital and was initially eleventh in line to the throne; he is now thirteenth. Ernest was born at home in the UK and is now fourteenth in line.

The family’s main residence was Frogmore Cottage from November 2020 until May 2022, after which they reportedly moved to Portugal, where Brooksbank works for Michael Meldman, and occasionally resided at Ivy Cottage in Kensington Palace while in the UK.

Princess Eugenie does not receive a taxpayer-funded allowance but participates in public activities mainly related to her charitable work. Her charitable engagements include support for the Teenage Cancer Trust, Children in Crisis (which merged with Street Child), and the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital. She is patron of various charities, including Horatio’s Garden and Anti-Slavery International, and has served as an ambassador for organizations such as the Artemis Council and Project Zero.

In her advocacy efforts, Eugenie co-founded the Anti-Slavery Collective in 2017 and launched a podcast, Floodlight, in April 2022, focusing on modern slavery issues. She has also been involved in environmental initiatives, including patronage of the Blue Marine Foundation and launching the Ocean Advocate Series in 2022. In 2018, she married Jack Brooksbank at Windsor Castle; their wedding was noted for her choice to showcase her surgical scar on her wedding dress. She and Brooksbank have two sons, August and Ernest.

Eugenie participated in the funeral proceedings for Queen Elizabeth II, including a vigil around her coffin during her period of mourning in September 2022.
