Introduction
Lady Augusta Gordon (née FitzClarence) was born on 17 November 1803 in Bushy House, Teddington, as the fourth daughter of Prince William, Duke of Clarence and St Andrews, and his mistress Dorothea Jordan. Her father was a member of the British royal family, and her mother was a renowned actress. Augusta had nine siblings—four sisters and five brothers—all bearing the surname FitzClarence.
Her parents' relationship lasted for approximately twenty years, during which they resided at Clarence Lodge and later at Bushy House. Although they never married, William IV and Dorothea Jordan maintained a domestic partnership, with William providing financial support and caring for their children until their separation in 1811. Dorothea Jordan continued her acting career after the separation, moving to Boulogne, France, in 1815, where she died on 5 July 1816.
In 1818, Augusta and her siblings were granted a pension of £500, and Augusta received her own version of the Royal Arms. Her early education was overseen by tutors, including Baron Franz Ludwig von Bibra, who left in 1822 after completing the education of the FitzClarence children. Following her father's accession as King William IV in 1830, the FitzClarence family was elevated in social rank; they attended court, although their presence was met with disapproval by the Duchess of Kent.
Augusta married the Hon. John Kennedy-Erskine on 5 July 1827. He was the son of the 13th Earl of Cassilis and held the rank of captain in the 16th Lancers. The couple had three children: William Henry Kennedy-Erskine (born 1828), Wilhelmina "Mina" Kennedy-Erskine (born 1830), and Augusta Anne Millicent Kennedy-Erskine (born 1831). John Kennedy-Erskine died on 6 March 1831, several months before the birth of their youngest child, Millicent. After his death, Augusta resided at Railshead on the River Thames, where King William IV often visited her and her children.
In 1836, Augusta married Lord Frederick Gordon, the third son of George Gordon, 9th Marquess of Huntly. Gordon was a professional sailor who became Admiral of the Navy in 1868. The marriage produced no surviving children. Augusta and her second husband lived at Kensington Palace after being forced to leave Railshead due to disputes with her former in-laws. They also traveled to Germany, France, and Italy between 1847 and 1850. Her daughters from her first marriage married in 1855; Wilhelmina to the 2nd Earl of Munster and Millicent to James Hay Erskine Wemyss.
Lady Augusta Gordon passed away on 8 December 1865.
