Introduction

Kanji Nakamura (born October 17, 1888 – December 31, 1983) was a Japanese banker and nobleman. He held the title of baron and was active as a member of the House of Peers. His granddaughter, Kumiko Hashimoto, is the wife of the 82nd and 83rd Prime Minister, Ryutaro Hashimoto. Politician Gaku Hashimoto is his great-grandson.

He was born in Okayama Prefecture as the second son of Army officer Yujiro Nakamura. His mother was Kunii, from Okayama Prefecture, adopted by Toyokichi Harada. He first attended Gakushuin Middle School, then progressed to the Upper School. During his studies, he became close with Tatsuji Satomi, and together they published the magazine "Mugi" and were active as members of Shirakaba (White Birch).

In 1914, he graduated from the Faculty of Law, Department of Economics at Tokyo Imperial University (now the University of Tokyo). That same year, he joined Yokohama Specie Bank (later the Bank of Japan), beginning his career. He held various positions including deputy branch manager at Calcutta, deputy head of the Karachi office, branch manager of Rangoon, deputy branch manager of Tokyo, branch manager of Seattle, and head office manager. He also served as president of Shimizu Sangyo.

Upon the death of his father Yujiro in 1928, he inherited the family headship and succeeded to the title of baron.

After World War II, on May 11, 1946, he was elected as a baron member of the House of Peers. He was elected through a by-election and belonged to the Seiyukai (Friends of the Constitution) party. He served as a member of the House of Peers until its abolition.

His family included his father Yujiro and mother Kunii, as well as his younger brother Kichi, who was a government official. His sister-in-law, Akiko, was the third daughter of Sadayo Wakamiya. His first wife was Yaeko, the youngest daughter of Baron Yoshio Sakatanoya. After Yaeko's death, he remarried his sister-in-law Akiko. His daughter Taeko was married to his son Kuji, and she adopted a son from businessman Kuranosuke Kanno as her husband's heir.
