Introduction
George Compton, 4th Earl of Northampton, was born on 18 October 1664 and died on 15 April 1727. He was a member of the British aristocracy and held the title of Earl of Northampton. From 1664 to 1681, he was styled as Lord Compton. He was the son of James Compton, 3rd Earl of Northampton, and his wife, Mary Noel. His younger brother was Spencer Compton, who later became the Prime Minister and was created Earl of Wilmington.
In 1681, at the age of 17, Compton succeeded his father as Earl of Northampton. His notable roles included serving as Lord Lieutenant of Warwickshire from 1686 to 1687 and again from 1689 to 1727. Additionally, he held the position of Constable of the Tower of London from 1712 to 1715. During the coronation of William and Mary in 1689, he participated in the event by bearing the King's sceptre and cross. In 1702, he was appointed to the Privy Council.
Compton was married twice. His first marriage was in 1686 to Jane Fox, who was the daughter of Sir Stephen Fox and his first wife, Elizabeth Whittle. Jane Fox was also the half-sister of Henry Fox, 1st Baron Holland. She died on 10 June 1721. His second marriage took place on 3 July 1726 to Elizabeth, Lady Thorold, the widow of Sir George Thorold, 1st Baronet. Elizabeth was the daughter of Sir James Rushout, 1st Baronet, and Alice Pitt. She died at the age of 67 on 15 January 1750 and was buried alongside her parents at Blockley, Gloucestershire.
George Compton died on 15 April 1727, at the age of 62. He was succeeded by his eldest son, James Compton, who became the next Earl of Northampton.
