George Compton, 6th Earl Of Northampton

George Compton, 6th Earl of Northampton (1692 – 6 December 1758), was a British nobleman and politician. He held the title of Earl of Northampton from 1754 until his death in 1758. Prior to inheriting the earldom, he was known as the Honourable George Compton.

Born in 1692, he was the second son of George Compton, 4th Earl of Northampton, and Jane Fox, daughter of Sir Stephen Fox of Farley, Wiltshire. His familial connections included notable relatives: his uncle was Spencer Compton, 1st Earl of Wilmington, who served as Prime Minister, and his first cousin was Henry Fox, 1st Baron Holland.

Compton's education began at Eton College, where he studied from 1706 to 1707. Following his schooling, he pursued a military career. In 1707, he was commissioned as a cornet in the Royal Horse Guards. By 1713, he had advanced to the ranks of guidon and major in the 2nd Life Guards. He was listed on the reserve list in 1715.

In his political career, Compton was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Tamworth in a by-election in January 1727. Later that year, at the general election, he was returned as MP for Northampton. During his time in Parliament, he served briefly as a Lord of the Treasury in 1742.

In 1754, upon the death of his elder brother, he inherited the earldom and became the 6th Earl of Northampton. This hereditary change required him to vacate his seat in the House of Commons and take a seat in the House of Lords.

George Compton died childless on 6 December 1758. His titles were passed on to his nephew, Charles Compton, upon his death.
