Introduction
Wentworth Canning Blackett Beaumont, 1st Viscount Allendale, PC, JP, DL, was born on December 2, 1860, at Bywell Hall in Northumberland. He was the son of Wentworth Beaumont, 1st Baron Allendale, and Lady Margaret Anne de Burgh, daughter of Ulick de Burgh, 1st Marquess of Clanricarde. His maternal lineage included Harriet Canning, daughter of George Canning, the former British Prime Minister. Beaumont was baptized in London.
He received education at Eton College and graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge, with a Master of Arts degree in 1888.
Beaumont's political career began when he was elected Member of Parliament for Hexham in 1895, a position he held until 1907. In 1905, he served as Vice-Chamberlain of the Household under Prime Minister Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman. In February 1907, upon the death of his father, he succeeded as the 2nd Baron Allendale, adopting the courtesy title "Hon. Wentworth Beaumont" between 1906 and 1907. Subsequently, he was appointed Captain of the Yeomen of the Guard in April 1907 and was sworn into the Privy Council in May of that year.
On July 5, 1911, Beaumont was elevated to the peerage as Viscount Allendale, of Allendale and Hexham in the County of Northumberland. From October 1911 until 1916, he served as a Lord-in-waiting, a position within the royal household, under Prime Minister H. H. Asquith.
He was also appointed a deputy lieutenant of Northumberland in September 1901.
In his personal life, Lord Allendale married Lady Alexandrina Vane-Tempest, daughter of George Vane-Tempest, 5th Marquess of Londonderry, on November 12, 1889. The couple had six children:
- Wentworth Henry Canning Beaumont, 2nd Viscount Allendale (August 6, 1890 – December 16, 1956),
- Margaret Helen Beaumont (November 13, 1892 – June 10, 1958), who married the 5th Earl Fortescue,
- Aline Mary de Burgh Beaumont (April 23, 1895 – April 15, 1967),
- Diane Beaumont (1896 – January 31, 1897),
- Ralph Edward Blackett Beaumont (February 12, 1901 – September 18, 1977),
- Agatha Violet Beaumont (December 26, 1903 – January 15, 1994).
Lord Allendale passed away in London on December 12, 1923, at the age of 63. He was buried in the grounds of Bretton Hall near Wakefield.
