Introduction
Wentworth Blackett Beaumont, 1st Baron Allendale (11 April 1829 β 13 February 1907), was a British industrialist and politician affiliated with the Liberal Party.
**Early Life and Education**
He was born as the eldest son of Thomas Beaumont and Henrietta Jane Emma, the daughter of John Atkinson. His formal education included attendance at Harrow School and subsequently at St John's College, Cambridge.
**Business Ventures and Political Career**
Lord Allendale held ownership of extensive estates and mining operations in Northumberland. His political career included serving as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Northumberland South from 1852 until 1885. Following this, he represented Tyneside as an MP from 1886 to 1892. In the year 1906, he was elevated to the peerage as Baron Allendale, with the territorial designation of Allendale and Hexham in Northumberland.
**Family**
In 1856, Lord Allendale married Lady Margaret Anne, the daughter of Ulick de Burgh, 1st Marquess of Clanricarde, and Harriet, daughter of George Canning. Their marriage produced three sons and three daughters. Their youngest son, the Honourable Hubert Beaumont, served as a Liberal Member of Parliament for Eastbourne.
Following the death of his first wife in 1888, Lord Allendale married Edith Althea in 1891. She was the daughter of Lieutenant-General Henry Meade-Hamilton and the widow of Major-General Sir George Pomeroy-Colley. There were no children from this second marriage.
**Death and Succession**
Lord Allendale passed away in February 1907 at the age of 77. His eldest son, Wentworth Beaumont, succeeded him as the second Baron Allendale. Wentworth later became a Liberal politician as well and was granted the title of Viscount Allendale in 1911. Lady Allendale died in May 1927.
