Introduction
Major-General Thomas Pelham-Clinton, 3rd Duke of Newcastle-under-Lyne, was born on 1 July 1752 and was christened on 28 July 1752 at St Margaret's, Westminster. He was the second son and the eldest surviving son of Henry Pelham-Clinton, 2nd Duke of Newcastle-under-Lyne, and Lady Catherine Pelham, daughter of Henry Pelham.
Initially styled Lord Thomas Pelham-Clinton, he held this title until 1779. In 1779, he succeeded his father as the Earl of Lincoln, and in 1794, he inherited the dukedom, becoming the 3rd Duke of Newcastle-under-Lyne. He held the dukedom for approximately one year before his death in 1795.
Pelham-Clinton pursued a military career following his education. In April 1774, he accompanied General Henry Lloyd, General Henry Clinton, and Major Thomas Carleton as an "English observer" during the Second Russo-Turkish War on the Danube river. He served in America during the American War of Independence as an Aide-de-Camp to his relative, General Sir Henry Clinton. Subsequently, he served as aide-de-camp to the king. He achieved the rank of Major-General in 1787.
In addition to his military service, Pelham-Clinton was a Member of Parliament. He represented Westminster from 1774 to 1780 and East Retford from 1781 to 1794. From 1794 until his death in 1795, he served as Lord Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire.
In May 1782, he married Lady Anna Maria Stanhope, daughter of William Stanhope, 2nd Earl of Harrington. They had four children: two sons and two daughters. His eldest son, Henry, succeeded him as the 4th Duke of Newcastle-under-Lyne.
Pelham-Clinton died at his country residence in Sunninghill, Berkshire, on 18 May 1795, at the age of 42. His death was caused by the effects of an emetic he took for whooping cough. His widow, Lady Anna Maria Stanhope, later married General Sir Charles Gregan Craufurd and died in 1834.
