Introduction
Sir John Conway Colthurst, 1st Baronet (died 19 September 1775), was an Irish politician active during the 18th century. He was part of the Anglo-Irish aristocracy and held the title of baronet.
Born into the Colthurst family, he was the son of John Colthurst and Alice Conway. On 3 August 1744, he was created a baronet of Ardum in the Baronetage of Ireland, establishing his hereditary title.
Colthurst served as a Member of Parliament in the Irish House of Commons representing three different constituencies over his political career. He was elected as the MP for Doneraile in 1751, a position he held until 1760. Subsequently, he represented Youghal from 1761 until 1768. His final parliamentary role was as the MP for Castlemartyr, a position he maintained from 1769 until his death in 1775.
In 1741, Colthurst married Lady Charlotte FitzMaurice, who was the daughter of Thomas FitzMaurice, 1st Earl of Kerry, and Anne Petty. There are no additional details provided regarding children or further family relations.
His death occurred on 19 September 1775, and he was succeeded by his heirs as per the hereditary noble titles. References for his life and career include Debrett's Peerage and Baronetage (1990 edition) and Leigh Rayment's list of baronets.
