Introduction
James Fairlie Cooper was born in New York City on October 2, 1814. He attended the United States Military Academy at West Point, graduating in 1834, ranked 17th out of 36 cadets. Following his graduation, Cooper was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Army and served in the 3rd U.S. Infantry. His military service included conducting topographical surveys and being stationed in Louisiana. He resigned his commission in 1837.
By 1843, Cooper had taken on the role of superintendent of the Dahlonega Mint in Georgia, a position he held until 1849. During his tenure as superintendent, approximately 44 percent of the coinage produced at the Dahlonega Mint was struck under his leadership.
In 1861, with the onset of the American Civil War, Cooper briefly served in the Confederate States Army. His service period lasted from May to December of that year, during which he held the rank of lieutenant colonel in the 7th Georgia Infantry Regiment. After his military service, he pursued a career in civil engineering and survey work.
James Fairlie Cooper passed away in Atlanta, Georgia, on October 14, 1869. He was interred at Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta.
