Introduction
John Tyler Cooper was born on March 26, 1844, in Marietta, Georgia. He was the grandson of the tragedian Thomas Cooper and the great-grandson of Captain Edward Dunscomb, a soldier who served in the American Revolutionary War in New York.
During the American Civil War, Cooper served in a Georgia military unit and participated in multiple battles, including the Battle of Chickamauga.
Following the conclusion of the Civil War, Cooper married Mary Crain Marks. Together, they raised a family.
In the winter of 1867–68, Cooper became active in local politics. He, along with other young men including the younger brother of future Atlanta mayor George Hillyer, organized the Young Men's Democratic Club of Atlanta.
On July 4, 1879, Cooper was admitted to the Society of the Cincinnati, an organization founded to promote the ideals of the American Revolution among descendants of Revolutionary War officers.
In 1884, Cooper served as a councilman representing Atlanta's Sixth Ward. Subsequently, he was elected as the 30th Mayor of Atlanta, holding office from 1887 until 1889.
