Introduction
Baptist Noel was born on 2 November 1658. He was the second surviving son of Baptist Noel, 3rd Viscount Campden, and Elizabeth Bertie. In 1677, he succeeded his half-brother, Henry Noel, to his family titles and estates.
He served as a Justice of the Peace (JP) for Rutland beginning in 1685 and continued in this role until his death. Additionally, from 1689 until his death, he was a JP and Deputy Lieutenant for Leicestershire.
In March 1685, Baptist Noel was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Rutland. He represented the constituency as a Tory knight of the shire. His political career was active during this period until his death in 1690.
Baptist Noel married Susannah, the daughter and heiress of Sir Thomas Fanshawe of Jenkins, Barking, Essex. Together, they had a total of four children: one son and three daughters. His son, also named Baptist Noel, succeeded him and became the third Earl of Gainsborough.
He died on 28 July 1690 at the age of 31. He was buried at Exton, in Rutland.
