Introduction
Elizabeth Noel, Viscountess Campden (1640 – July 1683), was born Lady Elizabeth Bertie, the daughter of Montagu Bertie, 2nd Earl of Lindsey, and his first wife, Martha Ramsay (née Cockayne), Dowager Countess of Holderness. Her familial relationships included several notable siblings: Robert Bertie, 3rd Earl of Lindsey; Hon. Peregrine Bertie; Hon. Richard Bertie; Hon. Vere Bertie; Hon. Charles Bertie; and two sisters.
Lady Elizabeth Bertie married Baptist Noel, then Viscount Campden, on 6 July 1655, at the age of 15. At the time of her marriage, her groom was in his forties and had been widowed three times. He was the father of at least four surviving children from previous marriages, including Edward Noel, the heir.
Elizabeth Noel was the mother of nine children with Baptist Noel, 3rd Viscount Campden. Their offspring included:
- Baptist Noel, MP, who married Susannah Fanshaw and sired Baptist Noel, 3rd Earl of Gainsborough.
- John Noel (1659–1718), who married Elizabeth Sherard; their children included Martha Penelope Noel, who married Mr Dormer.
- Catherine Noel (1657–1724 or 1733), who married John Manners, 1st Duke of Rutland, as his third wife, and was the mother of his children.
A portrait of Viscountess Campden was painted by Sir Peter Lely. She outlived her husband by approximately one year and was buried alongside him at the Church of St Peter and St Paul in Exton, Rutland.
