Introduction

Baptist Noel, 3rd Earl of Gainsborough, was an English peer and Member of Parliament born in 1684. He was the son of Baptist Noel and was related to Wriothesley Noel, 2nd Earl of Gainsborough, as his cousin.

In 1690, Baptist Noel inherited the earldom from his cousin. Throughout his life, he held the position of High Steward of Chipping Campden.

He was married to his first cousin, Lady Dorothy Manners, who was the daughter of Catherine Wriothesley Noel—herself the daughter of Baptist Noel, 3rd Viscount Campden—and John Manners, 1st Duke of Rutland.

The marriage produced six children: three sons and three daughters. Their children included Baptist Noel, who became the 4th Earl of Gainsborough, living from 1708 to 1751; John Noel, who died in 1718; James Noel, who served as Member of Parliament for the county of Rutland and died unmarried in 1752; Lady Susan(nah) Noel, born in 1710 and died in 1758, who married Anthony Ashley-Cooper, 4th Earl of Shaftesbury, but had no children; Lady Catherine Noel, who died unmarried; and Lady Mary Noel, who died in 1718.

Baptist Noel, 3rd Earl of Gainsborough, died of smallpox on 17 April 1714 at the age of 29. He was succeeded by his eldest son.
