Ian Donald Cameron

David Cameron is a British politician who served as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 2010 to 2016 and previously held the position of Foreign Secretary. Born in London, England, he is a member of a family with significant connections to British aristocracy, finance, and politics.

His father was Ian Donald Cameron (1932–2010), a stockbroker associated with Panmure Gordon & Co., and his mother was Mary Fleur Mount (1934–2025), a Justice of the Peace. Cameron was born in London, although some reports incorrectly state his birthplace as Blairmore House near Huntly, Aberdeenshire, a residence linked to his family. His father was raised in Peasemore, Berkshire, and died in France near Toulon.

Cameron was married to Samantha, the elder daughter of Sir Reginald Sheffield and Annabel Jones, who became Viscountess Astor. She has noble family connections, descending from an illegitimate son of John Sheffield, 1st Duke of Buckingham and Normanby. Together, they have children.

He has two sisters, Tania Rachel (born 1965) and Clare Louise (born 1971). His elder brother, Alexander Cameron (1963–2023), died of cancer.

The Cameron family has notable aristocratic and ancestral ties. Through paternal lineage, Cameron descends from the Cameron clan and specifically from the 13th Lochiel, Chief of Clan Cameron. His family history includes notable figures such as Alexander Geddes, who built Blairmore House in the 1880s after making a fortune trading grain in Chicago.

Cameron’s ancestry includes connections to British royalty, notably descending from King William IV and his mistress Dorothea Jordan through their illegitimate daughter Lady Elizabeth FitzClarence. He is also related distantly to other noble families, including the Levita family, with ties to prominent figures such as Sir Alfred Cooper and the Duke of Fife.

His family has a longstanding history in the finance sector. His paternal great-great-grandfather, Emile Levita, was a German Jewish financier who became a British citizen and served as a director of the Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China, later Standard Chartered Bank. His great-grandfather, Sir Ewen Cameron, was involved with the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank. Several ancestors served as directors or held key roles in financial institutions, including Panmure Gordon & Co. and London-based banks.

The family’s financial involvement extended to offshore investments; in 1982, Ian Cameron helped establish Blairmore Holdings, an offshore investment fund. This fund, which used bearer shares until 2006, was identified in the Panama Papers leak in 2016.

Cameron’s extended family includes notable relations such as Sir William Dugdale, Katherine Lady Dugdale, and film director Joshua Dugdale. Other relatives include Adam Hart-Davis, Duff Hart-Davis, and Sir Ferdinand Mount.

In 2023, David Cameron was raised to the peerage as a Life Baron by King Charles III but holds no hereditary titles. He also has distant familial connections to the British monarchy through descent from George III.
