Introduction

Lady Sarah Frances Elizabeth Chatto (née Armstrong-Jones) was born on 1 May 1964 at Kensington Palace in London. She is the daughter of Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon, and Antony Armstrong-Jones, 1st Earl of Snowdon. She has one sibling, David Armstrong-Jones, 2nd Earl of Snowdon.

Her paternal family includes half-siblings: Polly Fry (born 1960), Lady Frances Armstrong-Jones (born 1979), and Jasper Cable-Alexander (born 1998). She is a maternal first cousin of King Charles III. As of 2025, her position in the line of succession to the British throne is 29th.

Lady Sarah was baptized in the private chapel at Buckingham Palace on 13 July 1964. She served as a godmother to Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, Lady Rose Gilman, and Lady Louise Windsor. Her childhood was spent primarily at Kensington Palace in Apartment 10, with upbringing involving a nanny named Verona Sumner and active parental involvement, particularly from her father.

Her parents' marriage was turbulent, leading to separation when she was 12 and divorce when she was 14. Post-separation, she and her brother spent weekends with each parent and holidays at royal estates such as Sandringham and Balmoral. During her youth, she engaged in landscape painting and participated in official royal duties, including being a bridesmaid at her cousin Charles, Prince of Wales, and Lady Diana Spencer’s wedding. In May 1987, she accompanied her mother and brother on an official visit to China and Hong Kong.

Educationally, Lady Sarah attended Bedales School, completing her studies with one A level in Art. She further studied at the Camberwell School of Art and the Royal Academy Schools. She spent two years in India, working in the film industry while assisting with wardrobe and studying wood gilding, through an internship under her father’s relative, John Knatchbull, 7th Baron Brabourne. Upon returning to the UK, she enrolled in a two-year textile and fabric design course at Middlesex Polytechnic (later Middlesex University).

Professionally, she has been exhibiting her artwork under the name Sarah Armstrong-Jones at The Redfern Gallery since 1995. Her work has received awards, including the Winsor & Newton Prize in 1988 and the Creswick Landscape Prize in 1990. In 2004, she assumed the role of vice president of the Royal Ballet, a position her mother had held, and was appointed president of the organization in 2024.

Lady Sarah does not undertake official royal duties or participate as a "working royal," but she maintains close ties to the royal family. She is frequently seen attending public events such as jubilees, funerals, and private family gatherings, including the Sandringham Christmas service.

She married Daniel Chatto on 14 July 1994 at St Stephen's, Walbrook, in London. The marriage was officiated by Reverend Chad Varah and featured a gown designed by Jasper Conran. Her bridesmaids included Lady Frances Armstrong-Jones, Zara Phillips, and Tara Noble-Singh. Daniel Chatto is from a theatrical family; his father was actor Tom Chatto, and his mother was theatrical agent Ros Chatto.

The couple has two sons:

- Samuel David Benedict Chatto, born 28 July 1996. He studied history of art at the University of Edinburgh and works as a sculptor. He completed yoga teacher training in India and is based in West Sussex.

- Arthur Robert Nathaniel Chatto, born 5 February 1999. He was a page of honour to Queen Elizabeth II from 2009 to 2015, attended Westminster Cathedral Choir School, then Eton College, and studied geography at the University of Edinburgh. He has worked as a personal trainer and served with the Royal Marines as of 2022.
