Introduction

Lady Sarah Frances Elizabeth Chatto (née Armstrong-Jones) was born on 1 May 1964 at Kensington Palace in London. She is the only daughter of Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon, and Antony Armstrong-Jones, 1st Earl of Snowdon. Her full name at birth is Lady Sarah Frances Elizabeth Armstrong-Jones.

She was baptized in the private chapel at Buckingham Palace on 13 July 1964. Her godparents include Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, Lady Rose Gilman, and Lady Louise Windsor. She also has half-siblings on her father’s side: Polly Fry (born 1960), Lady Frances Armstrong-Jones (born 1979), and Jasper Cable-Alexander (born 1998).

During childhood, Sarah and her brother, David Armstrong-Jones, then Viscount Linley, grew up in Apartment 10 at Kensington Palace. Their caregiver was Verona Sumner, a nanny, but their parents were relatively involved in their upbringing. Her father engaged them in activities such as building and creative projects. The marriage of her parents was strained; they separated when she was 12 and divorced when she was 14. Post-divorce, she and her brother spent weekends with each parent, at locations including Nymans and Royal Lodge, and holidays on royal estates such as Sandringham and Balmoral, where she practiced landscape painting.

Lady Sarah was a bridesmaid at the wedding of her cousin Charles, Prince of Wales, and Lady Diana Spencer. In May 1987, she participated in an official visit to China and Hong Kong alongside her mother and brother.

Her education included attendance at Bedales School, which she left with a single A level in Art. She furthered her studies at the Camberwell School of Art and the Royal Academy Schools. During her time in India, she worked for two years with her father on the production of the film "A Passage to India," where she was involved in wardrobe assistance and studying wood gilding under Thomas Messel, a relative of her family. She later completed a two-year course in textile and fabric design at Middlesex Polytechnic (later Middlesex University).

Professionally, Sarah has exhibited her artwork under the name Sarah Armstrong-Jones at The Redfern Gallery since 1995. Her artwork has received awards, including the Winsor & Newton Prize in 1988 and the Creswick Landscape Prize in 1990.

In 2004, she became vice president of the Royal Ballet, a position previously held by her mother. In 2024, she was appointed president of the organization.

Although she does not undertake public duties and is not classified as a "working royal," she is regularly seen attending various official and semi-private royal events, such as jubilees, funerals, and the Sandringham Christmas service, often accompanying her sons.

Lady Sarah married Daniel Chatto on 14 July 1994. The wedding was officiated by Reverend Chad Varah, founder of the Samaritans, at St Stephen's, Walbrook, London. Her gown was designed by Jasper Conran, and her bridesmaids included her half-sister Lady Frances Armstrong-Jones, Zara Phillips, and Tara Noble-Singh.

The couple has two sons:

- Samuel David Benedict Chatto, born 28 July 1996, who is 30th in the line of succession as of September 2025. He studied at Eton College and later in the history of art at the University of Edinburgh. He works as a sculptor and has completed yoga teacher training in India.

- Arthur Robert Nathaniel Chatto, born 5 February 1999, who is 31st in line. He served as a page of honour to Queen Elizabeth II from 2009 to 2015, attended Westminster Cathedral Choir School and Eton College, and studied geography at the University of Edinburgh. As of June 2022, he was serving with the Royal Marines and had worked as a personal trainer.
