Henry Clinton, 7th Earl Of Lincoln

Henry Clinton, 7th Earl of Lincoln, was born in 1684 and died on September 7, 1728. He was the eldest surviving son of Francis Clinton, 6th Earl of Lincoln, and his second wife, Susan Penyston, who died in 1720. Susan Penyston was the younger daughter of Reverend Anthony Penyston, himself the son of Sir Thomas Penyston.

Henry Clinton succeeded to the earldom upon the death of his father in 1693. He took his seat in the House of Lords in 1708. During his lifetime, he held various positions in the British government. Notably, he was a brother-in-law of the politician Duke of Newcastle.

In 1719, Clinton was among the main subscribers to the Royal Academy of Music, an organization dedicated to the production of baroque opera. From 1715 to 1720, he served as Paymaster of the Forces, a financial office responsible for the payment of the army.

In 1723, he was appointed Lord Lieutenant of the Tower Hamlets and Constable of the Tower of London. These were prestigious appointments associated with royal authority and the management of the Tower of London. In 1724, he was elected as a bailiff of the Bedford Level Corporation, an organization responsible for land drainage and management in the Fens of East England.

In 1728, the same year as his death, Clinton was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire, a position he held until his passing.

Following the dismissal of Lord Pulteney in 1725 due to a disagreement with Sir Robert Walpole, Clinton succeeded Pulteney as Cofferer of the Household. He was sworn in as a member of the Privy Council of Great Britain and was also a Sword Bearer at the coronation of King George II in 1727, a ceremonial role involving the presentation of the sword of state during the coronation procession.

Regarding his family, on May 16, 1717, Henry Clinton married the Honorable Lucy Pelham. Lucy was the daughter of Thomas Pelham, 1st Baron Pelham. The marriage produced two children: George Clinton, who became the 8th Earl of Lincoln and was born in 1718 and died in 1730, and Henry Fiennes Pelham-Clinton, who was born in 1720 and eventually became the 2nd Duke of Newcastle (under-Lyme). His son Henry inherited the title of Earl of Lincoln after his brother George's death, and he also inherited the title of 2nd Duke of Newcastle (under-Lyme) through a special remainder from his uncle, Thomas Pelham-Holles, the 1st Duke of Newcastle.

Henry Clinton had a notable cousin, General Sir Henry Clinton, who was a prominent figure in the American Revolutionary War.

Throughout his life, Henry Clinton held several titles and offices, including being a Knight of the Garter, a prestigious order of chivalry.
