Introduction

Miyakawa Shoko (born 1969) is a Japanese scholar of informatics and currently an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Nursing and Medical Care, Keio University. She is also a great-granddaughter of Sun Yat-sen, the founding father of the Republic of China; her great-grandmother was Otsuki Kaoru, her grandmother was Miyakawa Fumiko, and her father is Miyakawa Toichi.

In 1992, she graduated from the Faculty of Economics at Hitotsubashi University and entered graduate school. In 1994, she completed the Master’s program in the Graduate School of Commerce at Hitotsubashi University. In 1996, she enrolled in the doctoral program at the Graduate School of Media and Governance, Keio University, but withdrew in 2000. She received her Ph.D. from Keio University in 2002. In 2013, she completed a Master’s degree in Health Informatics at the School of Biomedical Informatics, University of Texas.

From her undergraduate years, she studied in the Ikuyo Kaneko Seminar, and during her doctoral stage, she was affiliated with multiple labs including Jun Murai’s Laboratory and Kaneko’s Laboratory, conducting research on the internet and databases. In 2000, she became a visiting researcher at the Securities Research Institute of Keio University. In 2001, she was appointed a full-time lecturer at Keio University’s Department of Nursing and Medical Care, promoted to Assistant Professor in 2006, and Associate Professor in 2007.

In 2014, she went to the University of Texas at Austin as an Adjunct Associate Professor at the School of Biomedical Informatics, focusing on the application of information technology in nursing and healthcare. She has also been involved in Japan’s WIDE project and actively promoted academic networking. In 2015, she served as Representative Director of the Information Support and Rescue Team.
