Introduction

Charles Stuart, Duke of Kendal, was born on 4 July 1666 at St James's Palace. He was the third son of James, Duke of York, who later became King James II of England, and his first wife, Anne Hyde. His paternal grandparents were Charles I of England and Henrietta Maria of France, while his maternal grandparents were Edward Hyde, 1st Earl of Clarendon, and Anne Percy.

His godparents included his three-year-old brother James, Duke of Cambridge; his cousin James, Duke of Monmouth; and Emilia von Nassau, Countess of Ossory. At birth, he was designated Duke of Kendal and was intended to be created Duke of Kendal, Earl of Wigmore, and Baron of Holdenby, though no formal patent for these titles was ever enrolled.

Charles Stuart's reign as Duke of Kendal was limited to his brief lifespan. He died at St James's Palace on 22 May 1667, at the age of ten months. He was buried in Westminster Abbey on 30 May 1667.

Regarding his heraldic arms, although he was only a grandson of a British sovereign, it was recognized that his uncle, who was the reigning monarch, would have no children. As a result, Charles received a coat of arms similar to that of a son of the sovereign. The arms consisted of the royal shield differenced by a label argent with three points, each bearing three torteaux gules.

No further titles or roles are documented beyond his brief existence. His short life is primarily noted for his familial connections and his place within the royal lineage of England and Scotland through his parents.
