Zhou Yisheng was the father of Zhou Yongkang, former member of the CCP Politburo Standing Committee and former Secretary of the Central Political and Legal Affairs Commission. His original surname was Lu, but he changed it to Zhou after marrying into the Zhou family as a son-in-law.

Zhou Yisheng came from a humble background and made a living by fishing for eels, a demanding job with limited income. Through hard work and perseverance, he supported his family despite modest means.

Together with his wife, Zhou Xiujin (who once served as head of the local women’s committee), he raised their children and maintained the household. In December 1942, their son Zhou Yongkang (born Zhou Yuangen) was born in Xiqiantou Village, Houqiao, Xishan, Wuxi, Jiangsu. When Zhou Yongkang began primary school in 1950, he changed his name from Zhou Yuangen to Zhou Yongkang on the suggestion of his teacher to avoid duplication with a classmate.

Although Zhou Yisheng held no prominent position, he provided a stable foundation for his children’s growth through his diligence and sense of responsibility. His simplicity and hard-working spirit played an important role in shaping Zhou Yongkang’s early character.
