Introduction

James Archibald Stuart, later known as Stuart-Wortley-Mackenzie, was born on 19 September 1747 and died on 1 March 1818. He was a British politician and soldier, the second son of John Stuart, the 3rd Earl of Bute, and his wife, Mary Stuart, Countess of Bute.

On 8 June 1767, Stuart married Margaret Cunynghame, daughter of Sir David Cunynghame, 3rd Baronet. The marriage produced five children, including John Stuart-Wortley (1773–1797), James Stuart-Wortley-Mackenzie, who became the 1st Baron Wharncliffe (1776–1845), and other children named Mary Stuart-Wortley, Louisa Harcourt Stuart-Wortley, and George Stuart-Wortley.

George Stuart-Wortley was appointed lieutenant-colonel of the Bedfordshire Militia in 1776. In 1779, he raised the 92nd Regiment of Foot and was appointed its lieutenant-colonel commanding. The regiment was taken to the West Indies in 1780, where he experienced significant health challenges. He returned to England in 1783, and following the end of the American Revolutionary War and the Treaty of Paris, the regiment was disbanded.

Upon the death of his mother in 1794, he inherited family estates associated with the Wortley family. Consequently, on 17 January 1795, he adopted the surname Wortley. Later, in 1800, he added the surname Mackenzie after succeeding to estates of his uncle, James Stuart Mackenzie.
