Introduction
Consort Chen (宸妃; Wan clan; 1431 – 22 December 1467) was a consort of the Ming Dynasty's Emperor Yingzong. She was born in 1431 to Wan Ju (萬聚), who served as a soldier in the Zhuolu guard (涿鹿衛). In 1443, she was selected to join the inner court of the imperial palace.
During her time in the imperial court, she became a concubine of Emperor Yingzong. She bore several children, including Zhu Jianlin, Prince of De, born in 1448; Zhu Jianshi, born in 1449; Princess Chun'an (1453), and Princess Guangde (1454), whose personal name was Yanxiang. She also gave birth to Zhu Jianjun, Prince of Ji, in 1456. After the Tumu Crisis and during the emperor's residence under house arrest in the Southern Palace, Lady Wan was living with Yingzong.
Following Emperor Yingzong's restoration to the throne in 1457, Lady Wan was granted the title "Consort Chen." In 1458, she gave birth to Zhu Jianzhi, Prince Mu of Xin. She was subsequently known as Consort Jingzhuanganmuchen (靖莊安穆宸妃), a posthumous honor awarded in 1467.
Consort Chen died on 22 December 1467 at the age of thirty-seven. She was buried in Jinshan. Her posthumous title reflects her status and reverence, and her life was documented in the "Record of Ming Xianzong," Volume 45.
Her titles evolved over her lifetime, starting as Lady Wan during the reign of the Xuande Emperor (1425–1435), later being known as concubine during the Zhengtong Emperor's reign (1435–1449), and attaining the rank of Consort Chen in 1457 during the Tianshun Emperor's reign (1457–1464). In 1467, she received the posthumous title of Consort Jingzhuanganmuchen.
Her issue with Emperor Yingzong includes multiple princes and princesses, with notable children being Zhu Jianlin, Zhu Jianzhi, Princess Chun'an, Princess Guangde, Zhu Jianshi, and Zhu Jianjun.
