Introduction
Jemima Yorke, 2nd Marchioness Grey and Countess of Hardwicke (née Campbell), was born on 9 October 1723 and died on 10 January 1797. She was a British peeress with familial ties to prominent noble families.
Her father was John Campbell, 3rd Earl of Breadalbane and Holland, and her mother was Lady Amabel Grey. Her maternal grandparents were Henry Grey, 1st Duke of Kent, and his first wife, the Hon. Jemima Crew.
Jemima Campbell married the Hon. Philip Yorke on 22 May 1740. Philip Yorke later succeeded as the 2nd Earl of Hardwicke. The couple had two daughters:
- Lady Amabel Yorke (later Countess de Grey), born on 22 January 1751, and died in 1833. She married Alexander Hume-Campbell, Lord Polwarth, but they had no children.
- Lady Mary Jemima Yorke, born in 1757, and died in 1830. She married Thomas Robinson, 2nd Baron Grantham, and had issue.
On 5 June 1751, Jemima Yorke inherited the title of Marchioness Grey through a special remainder upon the death of her maternal grandfather, the Duke of Kent, who held that title. As the Marchioness Grey was a courtesy title passing through a special remainder, her succession represented an extension of her family's peerage titles.
Jemima Yorke's titles and estates remained connected to her family legacy. Since she produced no male heirs, the title of Marchioness Grey became extinct after her death in 1797. However, her eldest daughter, Lady Amabel Yorke, succeeded to the title of 5th Baroness Lucas. Lady Amabel was later created Countess de Grey in her own right, establishing a new peerage title separate from the Marchioness Grey title.
