Introduction
John Campbell, 3rd Earl of Breadalbane and Holland, was born on 10 March 1696. He was the son of John Campbell, 2nd Earl of Breadalbane and Holland, and Henrietta Villiers, the daughter of Sir Edward Villiers, Knight Marshal. Campbell was styled Lord Glenorchy from 1716 until he inherited the earldom in 1752.
He matriculated at Christ Church, Oxford in 1711. His early diplomatic career included serving as Envoy to Denmark beginning in 1718, and later as ambassador to the Russian Empire in 1731. Politically, Campbell was a Member of Parliament (MP) for Saltash, elected in 1727 and re-elected in 1734. In 1741, he was returned as MP for Orford. He held the position of Lord of the Admiralty from 1741 until the dissolution of Sir Robert Walpole's government in 1742. In 1745, he was appointed Master of the Jewel Office, after which he resigned his seat in the House of Commons.
On 23 February 1752, he succeeded his father as the Earl of Breadalbane and Holland and became a Scottish representative peer. He was awarded a Doctor of Civil Law (DCL) degree from the University of Oxford in 1756. From 1756 to 1765, he served as Justice in Eyre south of the Trent. Later, in 1776, he was appointed Vice-Admiral of Scotland.
Campbell was married twice. His first marriage was on 20 February 1717 to Lady Amabel de Grey, daughter of Henry Grey, 1st Duke of Kent, and Jemima Crew. Lady Amabel died on 2 March 1726. They had two children: Henry Campbell, born circa 1721 and deceased on 12 May 1727, and Jemima Campbell, who became the 2nd Marchioness Grey and the 4th Baroness Lucas.
His second marriage took place on 23 January 1730 to Arbella Pershall. This union produced two children: George Campbell, Lord Glenorchy, who died on 24 March 1744, and John Campbell, Lord Glenorchy, born on 20 September 1738 and deceased on 14 November 1771. John Campbell married Willielma Maxwell.
John Campbell, 3rd Earl of Breadalbane and Holland, died on 26 January 1782.
