Introduction

John Manners, 2nd Duke of Rutland, born on 18 September 1676 and deceased on 22 February 1721, was a British aristocrat and politician. He was known by various courtesy titles throughout his life, including Lord Roos from 1679 until 1703 and Marquess of Granby from 1703 to 1711. Manners served as a member of the House of Commons during the early 18th century before inheriting the dukedom.

Early Life:

John Manners was the son of John Manners, 1st Duke of Rutland, and his third wife, Catherine Wriothesley Noel. Catherine was the daughter of Baptist Noel, 3rd Viscount Campden.

Political Career:

Manners was elected as a Whig Member of Parliament representing Derbyshire in the first general election of 1701. Later that year, he was elected as MP for Leicestershire in the second 1701 election. In 1705, he served as MP for Grantham, having been elected during the 1705 English general election. He was appointed as a Commissioner for the Union with Scotland in 1706. Manners continued his parliamentary service by being returned as MP for Grantham in the 1708 British general election.

By the 1710 general election, Manners was elected simultaneously for both Leicestershire and Grantham. Following the death of his father on 10 January 1711, he succeeded as the 2nd Duke of Rutland, which required him to vacate his parliamentary seats, as he had not chosen which to retain. In his peerage, he held the position of Lord Lieutenant of Rutland from 1712 to 1715 and Lord Lieutenant of Leicestershire from 1714 until his death in 1721. In 1714, he was invested as a Knight of the Garter.

Family and Marriages:

Manners married twice. His first marriage was to Catherine Russell on 23 August 1693. Catherine was the daughter of William Russell, Lord Russell, and Lady Rachel Wriothesley. They had nine children:

- John Manners, 3rd Duke of Rutland (1696–1779), married Hon. Bridget Sutton, with whom he had children.

- Lord William Manners (1697–1772), married Corbetta Smyth, with descendants.

- Lord Thomas Manners (died 1723).

- Lady Catherine Manners (died 1780), married Henry Pelham; they had children.

- Lady Elizabeth Manners (1709–1730), married John Monckton, 1st Viscount Galway; they had children.

- Lady Rachel Manners (died circa 1723).

- Lady Frances Manners, married Hon. Richard Arundell.

Catherine Russell passed away shortly after Manners inherited the dukedom. He married a second time to Lucy Sherard, daughter of Bennet Sherard, 2nd Baron Sherard, on 1 January 1713. Their children included:

- Lord Sherard Manners (circa 1713–1742), who served as MP for Tavistock.

- Lord James Manners (1720–1790).

- Lord George Manners (died December 1721).

- Lady Caroline Manners (died 1769), who married Sir Henry Harpur, 5th Baronet, and later Sir Robert Burdett, 4th Baronet.

- Lady Lucy Manners (circa 1717–1788), married William Graham, 2nd Duke of Montrose.

- Lord Robert Manners (circa 1721–1782), married Mary Digges.

- Other children: Lord Henry Manners (died 1745) and Lord Charles Manners (died 1761).

Notes:

Manners inherited the dukedom in 1711 and held various positions of official authority until his death in 1721. His familial alliances and descendants continued the prominence of the Manners family in British aristocracy.
