Introduction
Charlotte Sloane Paget, Marchioness of Anglesey (born Lady Charlotte Cadogan; 10 July 1781 – 8 July 1853), was the second wife of Henry Paget, 1st Marquess of Anglesey. She was born in July 1781 as the daughter of Charles Cadogan, 1st Earl Cadogan, and his first wife, Mary Churchill. Her familial connections include notable figures in British political and military history, such as her grandfather Charles Cadogan, 2nd Baron Cadogan, and her maternal grandfather, Charles Churchill, MP for Stockbridge and Great Marlow. Lady Charlotte's maternal great-grandfather was Sir Hans Sloane, 1st Baronet, and her maternal grandmother was Lady Mary Walpole, daughter of Prime Minister Robert Walpole.
Her father was elevated to the peerage in 1800, becoming the Earl Cadogan, which conferred upon her the courtesy title of Lady Charlotte. She had several siblings, including Henry Cadogan, who was killed at the Battle of Vitoria; George Cadogan, 3rd Earl Cadogan; and Lady Emily Cadogan, who married Gerald Valerian Wellesley, brother of her future first husband.
In her personal life, Lady Charlotte married Henry Wellesley on 20 September 1803. He was the youngest son of Garret Wellesley, 1st Earl of Mornington, and brother to prominent figures such as Arthur Wellesley, the 1st Duke of Wellington. Together, they had four children: Henry Wellesley, 1st Earl Cowley; Captain William Henry George Wellesley; Charlotte Arbuthnot Wellesley; and Gerald Valerian Wellesley.
In 1810, Wellesley divorced Lady Charlotte through an Act of Parliament, on the grounds of her alleged adultery with Lord Paget, the eldest son of Henry Paget, 1st Earl of Uxbridge. The divorce proceedings included witnesses attesting to the couple's affectionate relationship, and her brother Henry Cadogan challenged Lord Paget to a duel, which was honorably settled without injury. Following the divorce, Wellesley received damages of £24,000 from Paget.
Later in 1810, Charlotte married Lord Uxbridge, the newly divorced husband of Caroline Paget, thus becoming the Marchioness of Anglesey upon his succession to the marquessate in 1815. Charlotte and Lord Uxbridge had ten children, seven of whom survived infancy, including Lady Emily Caroline Paget; Admiral Lord Sir Clarence Edward Paget; Lady Mary Paget; Lord Alfred Henry Paget; Lord George Augustus Frederick Paget; Lady Adelaide Paget; and others. Several of their children married into notable noble families.
Charlotte Sloane Paget died on 8 July 1853, two days shy of her 72nd birthday. Her husband, the Marquess of Anglesey, died less than a year later, on 29 April 1854.
