Introduction
George Augustus Frederick Charles Holroyd, 2nd Earl of Sheffield, was born on 16 March 1802 and died on 5 April 1876. He was a British Conservative politician and held titles including Earl of Sheffield and Baron Sheffield.
He was the son of John Baker-Holroyd, 1st Earl of Sheffield, and Lady Anne North, daughter of Frederick North, 2nd Earl of Guilford, who served as Prime Minister of Great Britain. Under the courtesy title Viscount Pevensey, he was styled as such from 1816 until 1821.
In 1821, at the age of nineteen, Holroyd succeeded his father in the earldom of Sheffield. As a result of holding the junior title of Baron Sheffield, in the Peerage of the United Kingdom, he was able to take a seat in the House of Lords.
Holroyd served as a Lord-in-waiting from 1858 to 1859 within the Conservative government led by the Earl of Derby. His parliamentary and political activities included responsibilities associated with this role, which functioned as a government whip in the House of Lords.
His second marriage was to Lady Harriet Lascelles in 1825. Lady Harriet was the daughter of Henry Lascelles, 2nd Earl of Harewood. His first wife, Lady Lucy Pelham, born in 1763 and died in 1797, was a daughter of the Earl of Chichester; she died without issue.
George Holroyd died in April 1876 at the age of 74. He was succeeded by his second son, Henry, who was the eldest surviving son at the time of his father's death. The Countess of Sheffield, Lady Harriet, died in January 1889.
