Introduction
Thomas Gladstones was a Scottish merchant and philanthropist who lived from 1732 to 1809. He was the father of Sir John Gladstone, 1st Baronet, and thus the grandfather of William Ewart Gladstone, the British Liberal prime minister who lived from 1809 to 1898.
