Mao Yuanzhi was born into a revolutionary family. As a child, she participated in revolutionary activities with her mother, Wang Shulan, and experienced a difficult life. In 1929, she and her mother were captured but later escaped from prison with the Red Army’s help. The mother and daughter wandered through various places; to lighten their burden, Wang Shulan arranged for Mao Yuanzhi to work as a child laborer and a child bride. In 1937, Mao Min (Mao Zedong) sent a letter from Yan'an, after which Mao Yuanzhi transferred to study in Yan'an. She studied diligently and received care and encouragement from Mao Zedong, actively participating in revolutionary activities.

In 1938, she joined the Anti-Japanese National Vanguard and became a probationary party member that same year. Later, she was transferred to work at the Central Military Commission, where she performed outstandingly and received multiple honors. In 1945, Mao Yuanzhi and her fiancé Cao Quanfan bid farewell to Mao Zedong. Her uncle told her that her father had sacrificed himself and offered her valuable parting words. After the nationwide liberation, she worked in various organizations, demonstrating loyalty to the Party.

After being transferred back to the Central Organization Department in 1972, she continued to serve the Party. Upon her retirement in 1982, she actively organized family history materials. Mao Yuanzhi passed away in 1990 due to illness at the age of 67. She was buried in Shaoshan and became an outstanding Party member and loyal soldier.
