Introduction
Eleanor Randolph Wilson McAdoo was born on October 16, 1889, in Middletown, Connecticut. She was the youngest daughter of Woodrow Wilson, the 28th President of the United States, and Ellen Louise Axson Wilson. She had two older sisters, Margaret Woodrow Wilson and Jessie Woodrow Wilson Sayre.
McAdoo received her education at Saint Mary's School, an Episcopal boarding school for girls located in Raleigh, North Carolina. On May 7, 1914, she married William Gibbs McAdoo at the White House. William Gibbs McAdoo served as the Secretary of the Treasury under President Wilson. The couple had two daughters: Ellen Wilson McAdoo (1915β1946) and Mary Faith McAdoo (1920β1988). Eleanor and William Gibbs McAdoo divorced in July 1935.
In addition to her roles as a wife and mother, McAdoo was an author. She wrote a biography about her father titled "The Woodrow Wilsons," published in 1937. She also authored "Julia and the White House," published in 1946, which centered on the experiences of an American girl in the White House. Because of her family history and her writings, she served unofficially as an advisor during the production of the 1944 biopic "Wilson," which depicted her father's life and presidency.
McAdoo experienced health issues later in life, especially after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage in 1965, which left her largely incapacitated. She passed away at her residence in Montecito, California, on April 5, 1967, at the age of 77. Eleanor Randolph Wilson McAdoo was the last surviving child of Woodrow Wilson. She was interred at the Santa Barbara Cemetery in Santa Barbara, California.
Family relationships include her father, Woodrow Wilson; her mother, Ellen Axson Wilson; her stepmother, Edith Bolling; her former husband, William Gibbs McAdoo; and her sisters, Margaret Wilson and Jessie Woodrow Wilson Sayre.
