Introduction
Catherine Douglas, Baroness Glenbervie (née North), was born on 16 February 1760 and died on 30 January 1817. She was the daughter of Frederick North, 2nd Earl of Guilford, and his wife Anne. She held the courtesy title Lady Catherine Anne North prior to her marriage. In 1789, she married Sylvester Douglas, who later became the 1st Baron Glenbervie; this marriage took place several years before his elevation to the peerage.
Catherine and Sylvester Douglas had one son, Frederick Sylvester North Douglas. He served as a Member of Parliament for Banbury and continued in that role until his death in 1819 at the age of 28. Frederick Sylvester North Douglas had married Harriet Wrightson a few months before his death.
Between the years 1808 and 1817, Lady Glenbervie served as Mistress of the Robes to Caroline of Brunswick, who was the Princess of Wales. During this period, from 1814 to 1820, the princess was residing abroad. A portrait of Catherine Douglas by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres is part of the collection at the Morgan Library and Museum.
