Henry Cockayne-Cust

Henry Francis Cockayne-Cust was born on 15 September 1819. He died on 5 April 1884. He was a member of the British Conservative Party and served as a politician during the 19th century.

Background and Family:

He was born into a distinguished family. His birth name was Henry Cust. He was the eldest son of Reverend Henry Cust, who was a Canon of Windsor. His father was the younger son of Brownlow Cust, the 1st Baron Brownlow. His mother was Lady Anna Maria Elizabeth, the daughter of Francis Needham, the 1st Earl of Kilmorey. Henry Cust later adopted the additional surname Cockayne, by Royal licence, to become Cockayne-Cust.

Education:

Henry Francis Cockayne-Cust received education at Eton College.

Military Service:

He served as a captain in the 8th Hussars, a cavalry regiment of the British Army. Additionally, he held the rank of Major in the Shropshire Yeomanry, a British Army auxiliary cavalry unit.

Political Career:

In 1874, Cockayne-Cust was elected to the British Parliament as one of the two representatives for the constituency of Grantham. He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) until 1880.

Family Life:

In 1852, Cockayne-Cust married Sara Jane, the daughter of Isaac Cookson. She was also the widow of Sidney Robert Streatfield. The marriage produced two sons and four daughters. Their eldest son was Henry Cust. Sara Jane died in childbirth in September 1867.

Later Life and Succession:

Cockayne-Cust remained a widower after his wife's death and did not remarry. He passed away in April 1884 at the age of 64. His youngest son, Adelbert, succeeded as the fifth Baron Brownlow in 1921.
