Introduction
Lady Harriet Pitt (née Villiers; 1680 – 21 October 1736) was an Anglo-Irish noblewoman. She was the daughter of Edward FitzGerald-Villiers and Katherine FitzGerald, an Irish heiress. Her familial background placed her within the Anglo-Irish aristocracy.
In 1704, Harriet Villiers married Robert Pitt, a member of the House of Commons, who was elected in the 1705 general election. The marriage produced four children: Thomas Pitt, William Pitt, Harriot Pitt, and Catherine Pitt.
Her son, William Pitt, became a prominent political figure, serving as a Member of Parliament and later as Prime Minister of Great Britain during multiple terms from 1756 to 1768. Harriet was the mother of William Pitt the elder and the grandmother of William Pitt the younger, both of whom held the office of Prime Minister.
Harriot Pitt married William Corbet, MP, and Catherine Pitt married Robert Nedham, MP, indicating the family's continued political involvement across generations.
Harriet Villiers died in 1736 and was buried at Layston Church in Buntingford, Hertfordshire. Her mother, Katherine FitzGerald, and her son William Pitt the elder are buried at Westminster Abbey.
